Symptoms

Most colon polyps do not cause any symptoms. However, some polyps may cause:

  • Rectal bleeding
  • Abdominal pain
  • Changes in bowel habits
  • Weight loss
  • Fatigue

Causes

The exact cause of colon polyps is unknown. However, there are a number of risk factors that can increase your risk of developing polyps, including:

  • Age: The risk of colon polyps increases with age.
  • Family history: People with a family history of colon polyps or colon cancer are more likely to develop polyps.
  • Obesity: Obese people are more likely to develop colon polyps.
  • Smoking: Smokers are more likely to develop colon polyps.
  • Alcohol consumption: People who drink alcohol excessively are more likely to develop colon polyps.
  • Diet: A diet high in red meat and processed meats may increase your risk of developing colon polyps.

Diagnosis

Colon polyps are usually diagnosed during a colonoscopy. A colonoscopy is a procedure in which a thin, flexible tube with a camera on the end is inserted into the colon. The camera allows the doctor to see the inside of the colon and identify any polyps.

Treatment

The treatment for colon polyps depends on the size, shape, and location of the polyps. Small polyps may not need to be treated. However, larger polyps or polyps that are located in a difficult-to-reach area may need to be removed.

There are a number of different ways to remove colon polyps, including:

  • Polypectomy: Polypectomy is a procedure in which the polyp is removed using a snare or a forceps.
  • Endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR): EMR is a procedure in which the polyp is removed using a special loop of wire.
  • Submucosal dissection (ESD): ESD is a procedure in which the polyp is removed using a scalpel.

Prevention

There is no sure way to prevent colon polyps. However, there are a number of things you can do to reduce your risk of developing polyps, including:

  • Eat a healthy diet: A diet high in fruits, vegetables, and fiber may help to reduce your risk of colon polyps.
  • Maintain a healthy weight: Obesity is a risk factor for colon polyps.
  • Quit smoking: Smoking is a risk factor for colon polyps.
  • Limit alcohol consumption: Excessive alcohol consumption is a risk factor for colon polyps.
  • Get regular colonoscopies: Colonoscopies are the best way to find and remove colon polyps before they can develop into cancer.

Outlook

The outlook for people with colon polyps is generally good. Most colon polyps are benign and do not cause any problems. However, some polyps can develop into cancer. The risk of cancer is higher for polyps that are large, have a villous appearance, or are located in the rectum.

Regular colonoscopies are the best way to find and remove colon polyps before they can develop into cancer. If you are at high risk for colon polyps, your doctor may recommend that you have a colonoscopy every 3 to 5 years.
